Double Page Spread
A double page spread is a poster style page spread across two pages, it contains usually, one main image and either an interview or information linking in with the main images. All the double page spreads i have analysed have had light backgrounds and the same layout as i have choose to use, this gives it a good professional layout. The main image for my double page spread is either going to be a image of a person standing there with a guitar or without, or some form of musical instrument. Like the other two layouts this has been done on Microsoft Publisher and print screens to hear.
Front cover layout mock ups
I have done these two because i believe this will be the best way to get a final idea of what images go where, and where about the masthead, subheading, and other headings go. I got these two layouts from analysing other contents pages and front covers out of other magazines and then using the computer programme Microsoft Publisher made my own layouts done in a similar way. I then print screened the two layouts and pasted onto a paint document, then saved as a JPEG and uploaded onto hear. All the images used will be photos i have taken and uploaded myself.

Target Audience + Planning
The target audience will be between the ages of 17 and 30, this is because i believe that people are more likely to buy magazines at this age boundary. The reasons for this are things such as this age group are more likely be earning, there for are more likely to buy this magazine. Also the content of the magazine is more likely to appeal to this age category and also is more of a mature content.
i am going to add details such as bar codes, dates of each issue and prices on the front cover, i am going to do this because it looks more professional and is important to have added information like this. i am adding a price because every magazine i have come across has a price on the front cover, i believe this is a good marketing approach. I will not make it to expensive, i will price it at about 2 pounds. Making My front cover look as well done and professional as possible.
The media language within the magazine will be appealing, information giving, or an interview. This is because i find that within most music magazines, the media language is to me one of these.
The Images i am going to collect are going to be a number of different shots, this is important because it shows that time and effort has been put in to make it look as a good as possible. For the front cover, i am going to use one main image and a few smaller images around. The contents page is going to list the contents and then have some smaller images linking in with the content of the magazine. And then on the double page spread i am going to use one main image, just like the spreads of have researched, and then writing either to the left or right of the image.

Planning
Now i have done my research and analysis of front covers, contents pages and double page spreads, i have to now plan and get together ideas on what I'm going to use for my magazine. This will start with:
-Computer programmes
-Fonts
-Images and types of shots
-Colours
-Slogans and headlines
-Mastheads
-Subheadings
-Layouts
These are just some of the things that i will have to take in to account to get the best quality and effect as passable.
Computer Programmes
The programmes I'm going to use for my task will have be used to get the best outcome possible. these will be programmes such as:
-Photo Shop
-Microsoft Publisher
-Microsoft Word
-Paint
I will use photo shop for image editing and background editing, Publisher for double page spread layout and word to get the best font possible.
First of all i am going to design the layouts using boxes, i am going to label each box to show what goes where, this will then give me a template on where i put things such as images. This will be done on the computer.

Double page spread

This is a double page spread out of a different music magazine, this is a completely different lay out in comparison to the other two i have analysed. For example, the main image is towards the left side of the double page spread and not the right, and the writing is on the right hand side and not the left. This contents page has a kind of subheading in the form of a question, this gives the reader something to think about and will make this person read whats within this double page spread. The main image is of a group called the Black Eyed Peas, this is not stated but is obvious because the reader of this magazine will of probably heard of them and there for there is no need for there name to be used. Compared to the other two spreads i have analysed, this has a lot more writing, properly linking the main image with whats been written. The main image has been edited, this will have been done through a computer programme such as photo shop. The main person within this band has not been lightened where as the 3 behind him have been lightened to make the main group member stand out. This could be showing the reader that the writing could be on the whole more to do with him then the other members, also the subheading could be linking it all 3 aspects together, the main image the writing and the subheading. The background on the layout is the same shade as the other 2, Evan tho its a different magazine company that's made this one, its of a lighter shade giving me an idea about what i can use for my design.

Double Page Spread.
This again is a double page spread of a band out of Q magazine. This layout is very similar to the other double page spread in the way its laid out and produced. the image(the band) is situated to the right and the writing to the left, this could be that people read from left to right and are more likely to read it because if the way its been laid out. The fact that this a musical group of people is backed up by the fact that each person on this main image is holding some form of musical instrument. There is also another similarity between the two spreads i have analysed and commented on, that the fact that Lady Gaga had only her actual arms and head showing her body and legs where done as a manikin, these people have the same effect, the legs could be viewed as representation due to the possibility of them being replaced as music stands. The background colour is the same idea as the other spread, its a plain white background but this time the people on this page have a brighter verity of clothing. This makes them stand out the the audience so they can be more easily recognised.double page spread
This is a double page spread found in Q magazine, this has a variation of aspects with this page. This spread is obviously trying to get across to the audience that its about Lady Gaga, this is done with the whole spread covered with one main image of her but not her whole body, this image has been edited to have her face and arms and then a model style manikin as the main body. The birds behind the main image are there to maybe represent this artist, there are to rows of birds, the top row is there birds wings spread, and the bottom row with the wings down, this could be another form of representation to represent Lady Gaga as a person or artist. the fonts and colours used within this double page spread are vary plain and simple. there are a verity of of different colours of blues and purples making everything blend together as an image. There are a few paragraphs on the left page to link in the image with the story, this is in small black font, its away from the main image to maybe get the reader to have a look of the whole page to make the reader read this article.

Contents

I have found a contents page in Q magazine, it is very different compared to other contents pages, it has one large image of a rock and roll artist The image takes up 95% of the page and is a low angle shot to show this artist is domineering and powerfull and is in black and white not colour. The main masthead is in a read font with the date in black font next to it in the same size font. At the bottom it has the subheading, "The rolling Stones" in white font and a page number next to it, this shows what is on page 76. There is another heading labeled "Features" and underneath that a number of headings with page numbers next to each different heading. This is a good to use beacuse it shows the reader where abouts each story is in the magazine.

This is another RnB music magazine, the genre for this magazine is represented through a world wide RnB star Eminem. The way this magazine is represented is important because it gives an idea into what kind of magazine, like all the other magazines i have analysed there has been some kind of representation towards the institution. There other ways that this magazines genre is represented. There are other big RnB stars names placed next to the main image of Eminem. RnB fans will see the name and instantly know what this magazine is about and what it will contain. Once again the masthead is slightly covered by the main image and gives me the impression that its a well know magazine through the way it has been done like this. There are a number of headings doted around the main images, the main subheading being to do with the main image(Eminem).
Most the magazines i have look at have said or done something to get the audience involved with the magazine, this gives the magazines a sense of belonging and involvement. Like this institutions other magazines there are limited colours, the masthead is half black and half red, this links in with the other subheadings a headings, some are red and some are black. As far as i can see there is no price probably meaning its on the back page meaning it could be expensive.
Monday, 30 November 2009
This magazine is shown to be a R&B magazine by the fact that one of the worlds most known artist are located on the front as the main image. This is the only image to get the viewer to realise that it based on this main person and no other images. The shot the magazine has used is a close up, a close up is a picture of a person from the top of the shoulders upwards. The masthead is located behind this image, two of the letters are showing ether side if head and then the other two middle letters are half covered, this magazine obviously believes they are a well know and do not need to show the full masthead. The title is linked in with the main image, this is due to the main image having the same shade of blue as the masthead, this draws the image towards to the title. There are a very limited variation of colour, the 3 main colours found are pink, blue and black. This is properly to make it look simple and presentable. The subheading is surrounded by other headlines, the subheading is in pink, this is done because its vibrant and will seek attention from the reader. As far as music magazines go, this a very plain and simple magazine, the media language is short and sweet, it represents well what is happening withing the magazine through media language.

Contents Analysis

This is another layout of a contents page, this is the contents page for an issue of Kerrang music magazine. This contents page has a number of images to give an indication about what to find within this magazine, there is a main image underneath the subheading and then smaller images around it. These images are linked with the headings that are located in a list down the right hand side of the page, this is contents masthead is located in a different side to other magazines, instead of it been located in the left hand corner, it is found in the top right. The bottom section of this contents page are 6 images with a little sentence underneath to show what is happening in this weeks issue of the Kerrang.

This is a contents page for a magazine, I'm am analysing and researching this magazine to get an idea of what i co do for mine, this contents page has a number informational headlines, this is different or other music magazines because it does not specify clearly that it is a contents page like other magazines. It has a number of headings with information underneath giving the reader information about what to find. there is a main image within this contents page, just like other contents page's. they standard layout is the same as other contents pages in magazine i have looked at but i will need to research more to get a clear and confident idea on how to lay mine out.

Research

This music magazine is representing the world of music, it is an information giving magazine that gives the audience an insite into the world of music and what is happening within in. This is a well known music magazine, this is shown due to the main logo been a bit covered. This shows that the audience is familiar with this company n go on what they have read in there past magazines. The mast head is giving an indication of the main subject within this magazine, this being the band oasis, this is also shown by the main image of oasis's lead singer, he is posed in a confident and sophisticated way. The props used for example the guitar are used to show that its all about music, and that lead singer is dedicated to music. Underneath the lead singers name, there is a little subheading, this is saying that he might of been the best song writer that existed in the 90s. It is giving the reader something to think about due to the fact that after the sentence a question mark has been put. This magazine has also included a free product within it to draw the audience in, this is important because if the audience see this they will automatcially want to buy this magazine to get this fre item.

Research
Once again this magazine has the same characteristics as other magazines i have looked at. The masthead is located at the same place, this is important to get accross to the audience the name of the magazine and the genre of the magazine. this i obviously a well know music magazine because a bit of the first letter is coverd. There is also a clear sub heading and a main image, the main image is important because is shows what the magazine is really about, a picture of Foo Fighters main singer Dave Grohl gives a clear indication about the magazines image. I belive the magazine is aimed at the 16(young adult) to the middle age around 40. This magazine has put in the bottem right hand corner a round circle with some writing in about winning things such as studio time, this draws a person into buying this magazine because thats what the audience want to see, this way the will feel they have been thought about. There are 4 or 5 smaller images giving and indication about what els is within this magazine, this is like a number of other headins but done iin a more entertaining way. Underneith the main masthea there is a subheading(musical express) this also shows the audience that everything they want to no will be withing this magazine, just like a newspaper.

Research
This magazines conventions start with the Masthead, it is partly cover by the main image, this is showing that a viewer of this magazine instantly knows what the magazine is when they see the first letter. The Masthead is key to get a person to read the magazine, its in large bright font to give a clear indication of the name of the magazine people read from left to right that's why its situated in the left hand corner.
Media Language
L - Language: masthead, cover lines, main image, selling line, bar code, main cover line.
I - Institution: Companies, like TV channels, magazines, radio stations.
I - Ideology: This is the idea of what the magazine would be selling. The things that are included in something that makes it important, like the idea that ideology for a fashion magazine will be fashion and the ideology of a music magazine is music.
A - Audience: The target audience for a music magazine would usually be aimed at men ages over 18.
R - Representation: Represents a certain something or someone. Like how we see a character in a TV drama or in a film. It is the way you see something, the way it is represented.

front cover and evaluation

This is my final design for my college magazine, the denotation and connatation are both present within, the denotation shows the main image with a student with a grin and a smuggish look about his self, this is the meaning behind the image, the connotation shows that the student happy and must be doing well at the college showing that the college he is present at is a good college with a successfull lifestyle.
Evaluation
My college magazine is targeted at the 16-19 year old cage category, I have done this because the majority of the population that go to college and will read the magazine are the college students of this age group. I gathered research on other magazine to get and idea about the designs and layouts of a contents page and the front cover. The front cover has been laid out in the most professional and thought about way possible. The main image I have used was a mid close up shot, this is a shot which goes from the shoulders upwards. I have also used another image which is long shot type. I have done this to get a variation types of shots. I have used slogans and headlines to give and indication about the college news and information that is found in my magazine, this is important to give the reader an in site into what happens around the college. The front cover has a variation of fonts colours and word sizes.
The main mast head is in a black font and is done in Bodoni MT Black font, I have used this font to get the best and clearest outcome possible. The subheadings about college are done in the font Times New Roman. This is a clear and usable font. I have used black for this because the background is light and the writing stands out. I have also used a white font because I believe it looks more professional and smart, the subheading in white was done in a stencil font. I have used a picture of a ticket from and upcoming event to show the viewers what is happening around the college. I also gathered together information about contents pages, I have designed a lay out which would be most effective for the information layout.
The events that happen within the college are important to state, this is important because it tells the viewer what they want to no and see, it helps the reader make a decision and gives them a sense of knowing.
My Blog has been done to gather my information, research and planning to get the best ideas about what to use and what to include in my magazine, it helps me look back to see what I have found so I can progress and understand what is best to use. I have not put a price on my magazine because most of the magazines a researched and analysed I found hardly any of them have prices on, I have also put the word “free” on the top to give a clear indication to the reader that my magazine costs nothing. I believe this is effective because a person is more likely to read it if its free information.
I have used Microsoft publisher to design the lay out for my contents page layout and my final front cover design. And I used Photoshop to edit my photos for my front cover to get the best outcome, I have done everything to the best and highest standard to give a good a information giving magazine with a clear indication about the magazine.

Planning (mock ups)
I have hand draw a number of mock up layouts for my front cover and contents page, i have done this because i want to be able to do the perfect layout by looking as professional and thought about as passable, this is important because a person who is viewing my magazine will see the front cover first and i want the reader to get a good impression. I have also done a mock of layout for my contents page because its also one of the first pages the audience will see, i want them to be able to think that this magazine was thought about and was given a lot of time in designing and producing. The contents page is key, this is down to the fact that the reader will look hear for information and headlines which will be found further into the magazine, and if this is no up to the highest and clearest standard, the viewer might be put off by this.

Front Cover and Contents page (planning)
My front cover will include a number of images which will be taken by me, I'm doing this to get the best and most real effect passable. This will be done in the blue room and then edited on photo shop, this will help me get the most professional and clearest outcome. I am going to have large and colourful wording to make it appealing to the age group of my choice. The heading and subheading will be done in a clear and bold way to show clearly what the magazine is about. The number of images i am hoping to have are around 4 or 5 on my front cover and around the same on the contents page.
The contents page is going done as layout, i am going to hand draw a template for where everything goes on a contents page, i will hand draw it a number of times to find which is the best layout for the contents page. This is important because the more times i do it the better the lay out will become. I will use a computer programm for the fine template desing.

Target Audience and content (planning)
There is a specific target group i am going for with my college magazine, this is the 16 to 19 category, i am trying to appeal to this group because this is the age where people are at college. It would be pointless to design it so it appeals to an older age group because the people who are more likely to read my magazine are college students, and i have found this is the age it variates. My magazine is going to have a variation of story's and information, i am hoping to include on my front cover, information bout upcoming events, information on the college and what is happening around the college, and also things that will appeal to college students like real life stories. I will will include all these things because the students who buy this magazine will find it helpful and interesting.

Contents page research
This contents page has a very different lay out in comparison to the music magazines contents page. There are still large images giving and indication into what the reader may fine, and there are also headlines which the page numbers next to them. But the layout is different, the images are all bunched together at the top and the headlines are down at the bottom. Personally i do not think this would be be effective as the music one because the font and the colouring is not as appealing, also it does not have much of an indication into what the reader may mind due to the lack of variation.
Photoshop information

This video is an introduction in how to use the computer programm photoshop, this is used for editing things such as picturs and posters, im going to use this for my front cover. I am doing this because it is a very good way of getting the best and most proffesional way of doing the front cover of a magazine.

Contents page
This contents page from a magazine has a typical contents page lay out, it has in the left hand corner a clear indication that its a contents page with a white on red background. the main heading "DRUMMER" is a in big bold black lettering, this is so the reader knows what to expect in the magazine. there are pictures to show what is in the magazine and the story subjects. this pictures have the page number sin the corner to tell the reader where to fine what they might be looking for.The main headlines are listed in on the left hand side underneath the main headline. it gives a mini headline and the page number to fine the subject.

Ways in creating a front cover
The type of font i will need to use for my magazine, also the the colour and size will be important, i will have my college magazine title in a big style and a bright colour getting across the fact its a college magazine. the picture on the front is important because it gives a set genre of subject to do with my magazine. Size and angle is important because the better the picture and clearer the picture, can give the audience a preview into the stories inside the magazine. I will look at more college magazines to get idea if i should put a price and bar code on, this is important. There are a number of programs i can use to get the most professional front cover passable. i will be using certain images and certain fonts to get the best possible outcome, i believe bigger is better, larger and clearer fonts, the easier the audience will get drawn towards the magazine.

college mag info

This college magazine is a bright and appealing magazine, this magazine has a bright a bold heading, which defines what the magazine is about. this gets across to the students who would buy this magazine, real life stories and happenings that happen in the college life. This front page was done and edited on some kind of photo editing programme such as photo shop, properly done to get the best effect possible to make it look as professional as possible. It is a good way to sell magazine by putting real life stories into a magazine, people are generally interested in real life stories and what other people do and get involved in. I am hoping to use in my magazine real life stories, to get people to read my magazine.
This magazine has a bar code, giving the indecation you might have buy this magazine and its not free like the other magazine i found.

This college magazine has been designed in a subtle and information giving way, the difference between this magazine and a magazine such as nuts, is the fact that the target audience is 1 section of people, where as nuts is a aimed at a wider audience. This magazine is bland and obviously of a mature information magazine, the colours are very plain and the only to things that stand out are the heading and the writing in the center of the page. It gives information on the front in a bullet point form, listed underneath the sub heading in the middle of the page. It is telling the viewer what to find in this magazine. This magazine shows that it might not be a pay for purchase magazine, there is no bar code or price showing it could be a free magazine to the college students.
